My Tussie Mussie

Tussie Mussie is finished and I'm using it on my knees on these cold winter's nights in New Zealand. The pattern is from Kaffe Fassett's Quilts in Italy book. I took the quilt to Auckland a few weeks ago and photographed it in mum's garden.




I love seeing all those gorgeous Kaffe Fassett fabrics together in one place.



Although I do love hand quilting, some time there just isn't enough hours in the day to do everything, so I got this quilt quilted by Sue Burnett of Busy Bee Quilt Shop in Lyall Bay, New Zealand.  I chose an overall swirly design which I felt suited the fabrics well.  It certainly looks great on the back with the Kaffe Fassett wide back fabric.


I asked Sue to use Aurifil 40wt on the top, and 50wt on the back.  I chose one of my favourite colours - Aurifil 1243 - Dusty Lavender.

My quilt is 60" x 60" because my half square triangle blocks are smaller than the ones in the pattern.  It makes for a perfect lap quilt because I chose wool batting.

    This is a beautiful quilt. I wasn't particularly taken with Kaffe's fabrics when they came out but have slowly become a fan and have started collecting fat quarters...though they tend to be in all colorways. I love this purple look. The quilting really compliments this quilt and is not so dense that it makes the quilt unusable.

    Beautiful!! Great photos outside too. Those blue/aqua prints mixed with the purples is one of my favorite color combos in Kaffe fabrics. Stay warm. It's been way too hot here in Colorado so we could use some of your cool air although I'm not in any hurry for our winter to come.

    Fabulous quilt. Your Mum's lichen covered seat makes a great backdrop in the outdoor photo. Where do you buy the majority of your Kaffe Fassett fabrics please, Wendy? I'm looking to start a circle quilt with them, but am having trouble finding many. I'm in Feilding but heading to Wellington in a few weeks, hoping to add to my collection from the quilt shops there.

    Hi Marina - Kiwiquilter. Got to Busy Bee Quilt Shop at Lyall Bay - they have the best Kaffe selection in Wellington. But they are only open Wed-Sunday.

    Your eye for color is wonderful. I shy away from this line of fabrics because the colors are so intense. I love yours though.

    I love this one, as usual. How cold do your New Zealand winters get? That one of the few places to visit that has been on my wish list since early college days, when the possibility of travel outside of my home state became real.

    Your photo shoot shows off the glorious colors of Kaffe's fabrics and designs. Great idea to use the swirling quilting pattern and the dusty lavender color goes so well.

    This is beautiful Wendy!!! I have a nice stash of Kaffe fabrics and you're inspiring me to make an all Kaffe quilt. Don't you love that we now have wide back Kaffe fabrics to use on the back of our quilts?!!

    Thanks Wendy, for your reply re Kaffe fabrics in Wellington. Busy Bee sounds ideal and I'll make sure my trip is when they're open. Would be terrible to rock up on. Monday and find they're closed!

    I can't add much more than the others have said, but oh, my--is this beautiful! Those colors really are expressive of your style, and it has made for an extraordinary quilt, even in its simplicity. I also love the setting--perfect for this array of color!
