I started this quilt way back at Christmas 2014, after carefully considering if I could really hand sew a big quilt like this. I decided to take the plunge, and I'm very glad I did because I've really enjoyed the process, and learnt a lot about colour and pattern.
I always knew I would hand quilt my la passacaglia because I thought if I was going to hand piece a quilt in a traditional manner, I would hand quilt in a traditional manner too.
- how to get started on a quilt like this
- Glue basting vs thread basting
- thread selection
- attaching the borders
- hand quilting
I'm not quite sure where I'm going to put this quilt yet, but it's already got a hanging sleeve on the back, so I just need to find a clear wall space out of the sun.
Thank you for all the support I've received while making this quilt - from my blog followers and readers, the Millefiori/la passacaglia Facebook group, and on Instagram. You've all kept me returning to this quilt when I've drifted off to other things. Thank you.
And yes, I am already thinking about my next millefiori quilt. I already have the templates and paper pieces for Ballet Avec Kaffe Fassett from Willyne's second book - Millefiori Quilts 2. But I know she's working on a third book so I better get a wriggle on.
Finished size - 68" x 77" (173 cm x 196 cm)
PS I did enter my quilt in QuiltMania's competition, but my quilt wasn't one of those chosen by the publishers to hang at the International Quilt Festival in Houston this year. I'm thrilled that my mum's quilt was chosen though, and look forward to seeing photos of it there.

Amazing Wendy! I love the fabric you chose for the border. It really finishes it off beautifully!
ReplyDeleteBoth quilts ate really beautiful. I'm working on one but I'm way, way, way behind.

ReplyDeleteThis is one of the most beautiful quilts I have ever seen! Really! please enter it in more shows because it has "winner" written all over it!
ReplyDelete(I am rtakc on Instagram)
both quilts are so pretty and so enjoyed watching your progress - sorry your quilt wasn't selected to show but glad that your mum's was - congrats to her
ReplyDeleteI actually found you blog by trying to find Passagaglia quilts and how others quilted them. I have to say in my opinion yours is my favorite of all I have seen and I am sad it did not get selected for Houston. The colors you chose just say happiness and joy. Do try to enter it in other shows as I think it is show worthy. The one I quilted is going (I just can't believe it). I will be at the show and will take photos of all the the Passagalia quilts there so will see the one your Mother made. Hers is really pretty too.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Thank you for sharing this. It is very inspiring. Love, love your colour choices.
ReplyDeleteamazing! It's stunning. Love it.
ReplyDeleteso beautiful have so enjoyed watching you create this beauty Houston`s loss such a shame as I know everyone would have loved it.
ReplyDeleteWell done. A hanging sleeve as well! I really love how you have used the border fabric to set it off. You are tempting me to try this one!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is just stunning, I adore all the colours, and love how that thin blue border strip high lights the quilt colours. Well done on such an epic finish.
ReplyDeleteIt is a beauty, lots of work but a fantastic result.
ReplyDeleteWhat a magical quilt, it really draws one in! Your vivid colour choices are fantastic! Well done on finishing such a challenging project!
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing quilt. The color is bold and actually electrifying. I had to have a close look at the hand quilting. I am definitely going to review your process. Thank you for sharing, thank you for continuing to blog too.

You should be very proud of this quilt Wendy- its absolutely beautiful!! I love the border you constructed. Was it fussy cut from a Kaffe fabric? And it deserves to be hung where plenty of people can see it- A quilt show would have been a great start, but it wasn't to be.....
ReplyDeleteMAGNIFIQUE! beautiful♥♥♥♥
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous! My mom's quilt got into the Houston exhibit and I too an excited to see it there! Are you going to Houston?
ReplyDeleteAmazing quilt !
ReplyDeleteYou must be so thrilled to have finished it. Are you seriously planning something else along similar lines? (Silly me. Of course you are!)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your mum for having her quilt chosen for Houston.
Would you consider showing yours more locally? What about a NZ quilt show? Enter it and scoop the prize pool!
Congratulations on completion of this quilt. It has been a great pleasure to see the progress over the last couple of years. I love the border fabric and have some of my own that I am hoarding. Your quilt gives me an idea of how it will look when I use it. Your mother's quilt is lovely too. Who knows how judges decide which quilts to include in an exhibit. I don't know if I could choose.
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful quilt! The colours are amazing!

Wow - congratulations on such a beautiful finish!! Such a work of art. Well done to your Mum too; yours would have looked great in Houston as well.
ReplyDeleteStunning Wendy. You must be exhilarated and quietly chuffed! How wonderful to share a hobby with your Mum. Very special.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your finish Wendy, I'm sure that with a lot of others that follow your blog we are disappointed yours won't be going to Houston but curators have a vision for the show that doesn't always fit with what we create. I'm delighted for your mom that hers was included. I sure that someone will share pictures of hers in Houston. Congratulations on you both for finishing these lovely quilts.
ReplyDeleteThis is just stunning!!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing achievement! Your quilt is just stunning. I live in england so i have lots of walls out of the direct sunlight, if you want to hang it on one of those, feel free
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to you both. I have loved following your progress on both quilts!
ReplyDeleteSuch a vision to see it finally completed, border on, quilted. Will you be hanging it on a large wall to admire or actually be used on a bed? Shame that it wasn't selected for publication, but bonus that your Mum's quilt was. When people view this, sometimes they flick past quickly after they "ohhed" and "ahhed" for a moment, but the hours of pleasure you must have had making it, make it masterpiece in my eyes. Congratulations on a wonderful quilt.
