Auckland Festival of Quilts 2015 - the Aotearoa Quilters Green Challenge

I'm back with part 2 of my Auckland report.  This one is all about the green 12" x 12" mini quilts made for the Aotearoa Quilters challenge.  More than 100 people entered a mini in this challenge and the quilts are amazing.  It's now a travelling exhibition, and I was fortunate enough to see it at the Auckland Festival of Quilts. You can see future venues here.

"Aotearoa" is the Maori word for New Zealand. It means land of the long white cloud.

Unfortunately I can't attribute the quilts to their makers, because there were no names provided.  However, if you see yours here, then leave and message and I'll update this post. I could have studied these quilts for ages, but here are a few of my favourites.

I think my New Year's Resolution will be enter a quilt in the next Aotearoa Quilters colour challenge - regardless of what colour it is.  (yes, even if it is brown, heaven forbid).

It was hard to get a photo of them all because everyone was up close studying them, but here's most of the quilts.

The winning quilt was the green gecko by Sonja Prchel, two down from the big yellow sign.  You can see a better photo of it here.

  1. Loved looking at these little quilts. So many ideas. I did love the gecko and stood looking at it for ages.

  2. Thanks for showing us all these mini green art quilts. It's always interesting to see what people do with a single idea and how they run with it. Their green gecko photo is out of focus, unfortunately, so I'm just going to enjoy all the ones you showed us.

  3. Thank you for showing the details of all these quilts. I have seen a couple of photos of the display, and was thinking I should do something like that myself (make small green quilts). These are all fabulous.

  4. There are some really nice looking quilts there, they look a bit like a tiled wall. Small sized quilts like that are fun to make, definitely have a go next time, it might be yellow instead of brown :)

  5. This is interesting to see. Our guild has just set next year's challenge theme as ruby, to celebrate our fortieth anniversary. It does not have to be red, but I expect a lot of red quilts.

  7. Hi Wendy, Just found your blog about the green challenge from Aotearoa Quilters fb page. Great pics. I hope that you're going to keep your promise to yourself to make a 12 x 12 this year regardless of colour (even if it's grey). That's what my girlfriend and I said to each other last year after seeing the purple ones, and we said "it we probably be green, you know we hate green". LOL. But it was fun playing and I mostly forget my little quilt is out there in world after initially stressing about it. Have fun if you do make one this year.
