Spinning Stripes is finished

The final item on my Q3 Finish A Long list was my Spinning Stripes mini quilt. I'm really pleased with how it turned out.  You can see my original post about this quilt here, but suffice to say, I made this lovely quilt:

from this single piece of fabric.

Siren Song by Michael Miller fabrics

I'd been wanting to make a quilt like this ever since I saw this striking orange mini quilt at our national Symposium in January 2015.

by Shirley Mooney

It was made by Shirley Mooney, a very talented local quilter and tutor. Fortunately Shirley was running classes to learn to make this quilt, so I went along in June.  You can read about the class in this earlier blog post, and you can see more of Shirley's work here on her blog.

It's taken a few months to finish my quilt, mainly due to all the machine quilting required. Here's the back view:

I used three different colours of thread to quilt this, sometimes matching the fabric and sometimes contrasting. It's hard to show in a photo, but it is there, as the back proves.

So another mini quilt is finished, and once again, I really like it.  I still have another version of this quilt pinned to a sheet, waiting to be assembled.  That's what happens when you buy too much fabric - you just make another version.

Finished size is 22" high.

  2. I can see why you were drawn to the quilt in the show, and I really like the layout you selected here. The dark swirling stack in the center is awesome! I look forward to seeing what layout you choose with your remaining fabric.

  13. This is a gorgeous piece! I never could have guessed it all came from one cut of fabric if you hadn't told us. You really nailed this one!

  14. I am so glad I happened on your blog this morning. The round robin reports and photos are great, but your striped quilt talks to me - it says "try this" loud and clear. A border maybe ? Needs some thought and of course, a fabric as great as the one you've used.

  15. Wendy, I love this mini-quilt. The colors are so bright and your work as always is exceptional. I look forward to seeing the larger quilt. It is so interesting when someone finds a way to take one piece of fabric and turn it into a beautiful quilt.

  17. It's amazing how the piecing has really transformed the striped fabric into something different - beautiful. I love that you put in the effort with the quilting - that must have taken a long time with all the pivoting through your machine.

  18. This is certainly a very eye catching quilt. I really like it in the blue fabric that you used and think it would make an amazing centre piece for a square table. The quilting really sets the quilt stripes.

  23. Greetings Wendy - and my belated apology for putting a photograph of one of your quilts on my blog - JunezScrapz.blogspot.co.nz without acknowledging you by name! it was shown at a Capital Quilters meeting, and features on the top of your blog - which I found because Shirley put a link to your blog on a Facebook post - don't you just love the interweb! - and I love your Spinning Stripes too. Regards

  24. What a beautiful finish! It glows! I'm curious: with all the thread changes, did you tie off and bury the ends or finish them by back stitching or tiny stitching?

  25. That is so beautiful! I've been watching this on Instagram and it's better than I imagined! What precise work!

P.S. What's this "too much fabric" you speak of? ;)

  27. I am so glad you put the mug in the shot (mugshot?) as I still struggle with scale on this lovely project. I always imagine it much bigger. No idea why. Regardless of size, I think it lovely.
